Default Reverse in 91 GSX... is this common??

Since the search function is not working properly I am going to just post this instead. When I try to put my 91 GSX 5 speed in reverse, it will go in, but nothing will happen most of the time, and others it will take a second or two and then ram into reverse. I know the trannys on the 4 WD cars are weak, but have not heard of reverse doing this. Has anyone else experienced this before?Do I need a rebuild? What's going on....! Thanks in advance.

You "should" but not a lot of people do it, try it and see if it makes a difference.

yea i used to always have that problem in my talon with getting into reverse. Having to go into first and then to reverse.

But what you are saying sounds strange. Are you saying that the shifter feels like it went in but when you go to move it didnt do anything

Well, yeah, it seems to do a few funny things. Sometimes when I put it in reverse and let out the clutch it will just sit theredoing nothing and then bam, slams into reverse, like an automatic tranny on itsway out. Never had a manual car act like this before, but mytrans guy said it could be the clutch hydrolics mightneed to bebled the way its acting, very strange. The other times it will grind when I try to put it in reverse even with the clutch depressed. Since the clutch pickup off the floor is very low, I think it is a good chance he is right and I am going to have the clutch system bled and see what happens then.

Your tranny may be out of spec. Not broke, just a bit out of spec. I had a Integra that started to do that after 2 years of abuse to the tranny (not saying that you do that). Keep in mind the age of the car and what has or has not been done to it. Also note the type of tranny fluid you use, how old it is, and if it is even filled up. Tranny fluid should be changed...what...every other oil change? Whatever the time frame, I change mine every other oil change to every oil change.
