95 GS dies and sputters
I'm helping a friend out with his 95 GS. The car intermittently drives ok after a while then it will sputter and die. Wait a few minutes and it will start back up. The car continues to drive ok for a little a few miles, and then it will sputter and die. Here's what he's done so far in order of process of elimination:
New Battery
New Coil
New plugs and wires
New crankshaft sensor
New camshaft sensor
The only thing that we can both come up with at this point is to replace the PCM on this car. If you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears!

tps, dirty throtle body, throtle cable, air filter(take out the stock box and put in an open circle air filter to the stock intake piping)(19.99 at autozone) dirty injectos and the biggest one could be the fuel pump is shot or the wiring on the pump is bad. also start the car run it till it hits normal temp, shut off all lights, radio, etc. turn the car off then unhook the negative battery cable. let sit for 15 min. then hook back up and immediatley drive, that might be enough to reset everything the ecu runs. if that doesnt work get back to me.
It does this while driving. He can drive for about 10-15 minutes a drive around town. But somtimes it craps out, wait a few minutes and it'll fire up again.

TPS, does it do it while you are driving or at a stop? a/f mix, air filter.
ummm........ cant think of much else

It already has some sort of an aftermarket open circle air filter and tube. Will give the start until norm temp steps a try this evening.

I have a 95 GS that has the exact same symtoms, and was wondering if you had got yours fixed? I haven't replaced anything yet. I took it to Autozone and their code reader said there was a problem with the number 1 coil. I don't understand why it only runs really rough after you have been driving ten or fifteen min. Any help is appreciated.
thanks Eric
thanks Eric
I have the same problem too... let me know if u know how to fix it too. I also read about 6 thread with the same or simalir problem. Car starts runs fine then BAM it dies on you when its warm or 15 mins of driving.
my gs has this problem. it most likly is a high rpm sensor or the idol control sensor from what i have been told the only way to know is to go to a dealer and have it hooked up to a dignostic tester and they will tell u what it is.
I, of course, have the same problem. The only difference is that the car wont always die after 15min. It seems to be very random. I have new filter, plugs, and wires are fine. The dealer told me that the pcm could possibly be bad, but if there are any other fixes I would love to hear them. Thank you.
Alright guys, seeing as a few of you have this problem i'm gonna try and walk you guys through a set of steps to help narrow down the problem. Alright then, lets get started. For those of you who drive your cars daily, if you have cruise control, try and set it and see if the light comes on. If the light comes on and the car doesn't stay at a steady speed(like cruise control isn't working), then you most likely have a bad "reed switch". For the rest of you without CC, the first thing i'd recommend you guys check out is your speed sensor. A lot of your guys problems sound like the Speed sensor module not working correctly. If the speed sensor isn't working, the ecu doesn't know if the car is moving and can't send a proper signal to the ISC. If the ISC is still working but doesn't get a signal that the car is at idle or at speed, it won't let enough air into the engine to keep it at good idle speed, ~750rpm. So when braking or turning or doing any other function that will pull drive off the engine(via belts or pumps), the engine won't receive enough air to sustain it's own momentum AND provide the power to run those components. So it sputters or will die. Now if you have checked your speed sensor and it all works out alright, then you may be in for a more tedious dilemna. You special few need to see if the car dies when warmed up. If it does, then check the TPS. Now if the TPS checks out good, then you may posibbly have a worn head gasket. Before the car is fully warmed up, just park it and look at the exhaust stream coming out of the tailpipe. White smoke means your burning water of some sort. Excess water in the exhaust system is NORMAL!!! If you wait a few minutes and still see a steady amount of white smoke, then you're burning coolant. You may need to put a piece of colored paper of some sort to see if the exhaust has white smoke coming out. Now, if you're burning coolant, the head gasket isn't sealing properly and is most likely causing the engine to sputter and die. Changing the head gasket is something the weekend tuner can do, but for the rest of you, take it to a good competent mechanic. Now if you look at your exhaust stream and see black smoke, that means the fuel isn't burning properly. Check the spark plugs, wires, and ignition system and make sure the ignition wires are in the right order. Just remember, no spark in only ONE cylinder CAN cause an entire engine to die, regardles of some popular stories. Either the engine isn't firing correctly, or too much fuel is being thrown in the engine. If there's is too much fuel, i can help you determine what component needs to be replaced, just email me. So in closing, there are many things that can cause the symptoms, but for most of you i believe it may just be the speed sensor. Back in '98, there was a big discussion about the importance of the speed sensor and how it directly ties into the working of the TPS, ISC and ECU. If any of you need me to elaborate or have not found any of these solutions helpful, feel free to PM me or email me. Hopefully you guys will find this helpful. Good luck.
