It all depends on where it is leaking and how it is leaking. If it is leaking on the sides only or around the windows, it is the seals that the windows go into. If this is your problem, its a relatively easy and cheap fix. However, if it is coming through the middle of the top, you will most likely have to replace the top as it probably has small holes in it that are allowing the water to seep through.

I think its just a bad top....I know several people that have had mitsu convertibles from this generation as well as others and have never had any problems. Also, if its the original top, think about it, its 12-16 yrs old and its a form of cloth....the average convertible will have to be replaced every so often

iv been looking in to it and as long as you take care of it from the git go it will last a long time. i just bought this car and i think they left it out in the sun for a long period of time. theirs no holes in it but its the second layer of clothe that has deteriorated and thats why it leaking. my question now is, is their a chemical or sealant that can coat the canvas to give it a temp fix?

not sure about a temp fix, but I know they do make special cleaners and sealers for canvas tops (hard top and convertible). Not sure what to recommend though, I'd go talk to either Autozone, O'Reilly's, or your local dealer to see what is available and what they recommend.
