Is the top currently up or down? If it is down, have a buddy look down from the side towards the gears and see if the gear is actually spinning. If it is up, you will have to remove the entire back seat to even have a chance to see the gears. ....Hopefully it is stuck up though, being stuck down would be horrible.

first, I would double check the switch in the trunk to make sure it is not shorted out. Make sure when you flip it one way it whines and another way it doesn't. Then, I would check the fuses for the top. It is possible you haven't stripped a gear, but had pulled it off the gear system. Generally, if it came off the gear system it just needs to be realigned and it should start working again. Worst case scenario, take it to a dealer and ask them to look at it but not fix it yet. They might hear it or look at it briefly and know exactly what it is.

not that I know of, but you never know....I have not had to replace a convertible top so I'm not the best to ask about this.
