99 Eclipse: Speed sensor out again
I am getting extremely frustrated with my 99 Eclipse GS 2.0 liter. This car is just a PITA every year. I barely even drive it!!! I have to use it for work in the winters for a few months and then it's only used on the weekends spring through fall. My speed sensor just went out a couple years ago so I had it towed the 50 miles to the nearest place that can service a Mitsubishi near me. They installed a new one and it worked like a charm. The cost was over 400 dollars but it fell under the extended warranty I purchased when I bought the car. Like I said, I don't have to drive this car much and here we are barely 30,000 miles later. I parked the car last weekend and it was fine. Pull it out of the garage today and start driving down the road....no spedometer, won't shift out of 1st gear, not even manually if I put it in 2nd. So like I said, this thing lasted barely 30k miles and looks like I need a new one again. I'm sure we're just past the installation warranty now too. WTH is the problem! Is this a common thing? Would it be reasonable for me to ask for some type of credit over this POS part? Has anybody ever put one in?
for the speed sensor, and if it's not under warrenty anymore go to a speedo shop, they can order and replace one for around 140 bucks. I don't know much about the autos but with mine after i got it replaced it worked find, but with the autos it could control the gears too. but i would get it checked first and then trouble shot it after it's checked.
I just bought an OBD II Autoscanner and plugged it into my car. It gave 4 codes. One was 1st gear incorrect ratio. Don't know what that's about. Next was transmission malfuction. Followed by Speed sensor A malfunction as I expected. Followed by transmission malfunction. Both transmission malfunctions were 0700 codes. I looked in the manual at autozone to see if I could see where the sensor was located on an auto transmission 99 Eclipse and I couldn't find anything about it. I've messed around with vehicles on and off through my life but it isn't my passion and I don't like doing it but I will do it if I can and it doesn't take special tools. I'm just trying to figure out if this would be a project I could do myself or not. Does anybody know where the speed sensor is located and if it's reasonably accessible?
Oh yeah, this will be speed sensor # 3 at 80,600 miles.

the 99s were the only ones to suffer output (and occasionally input) speed sensor failures. Dont know if chrysler changed the design or manufacturer, but it must be since only the 99s suffer from chronic failure.
Ok guys I really need some help on this. Can anybody verify what's going on?
Here's another thread from another forum where the guy actually took a picture (at the bottom) and somebody circled the in and out speed sensors. Can somebody verify this? Would I just need to take my air box out to get to these? And when I looked for a speed sensor for this car at autozone online, they only listed one. Why wouldn't it list 2 different one
Ok the link didn't work. Here's the pic:
Well, can't post a pic either. I guess this site doesn't work with photobucket.

no the site works with photobucket you just need to use and not like most sites are. Then it will work. As far as where your speed sensor is, i cant help ya there cuz i dont have much experience with the auto's but it definetly looks like once you fix the speed sensor that will clear all the codes.
when i got mine new one put in my car, they reset the the codes and tuned it to my wheel size so i could get better gas milage, it like a gallon or two more per tank but that's six bucks here in washington.
