Default disaster warning

If you have what sounds like a belt squeeling, but no loose belts, check your harmonic balancer. Mine came loose from the rubber, cut into the timing cover and sent plastic through the timing belt. It didn't break the belt but it did slip enough to slam the pistons into the intake valves, bending every one of them. Luckily I was at a stop sign and the piston damage was minimal.

Funny thing, that happened to me like 2 weeks ago. I knew it wasnt the belts. It sounded really bad. I took home, left it there till i got home the next weekend and i looked at it. It looked like the crankshaft pulley was loose, so I had my parents take it to a shop because i had no time to fix it, and it was the harmonic balancer. The sound got louder as the rpms went up. Luckily nothing bad happened to "my baby." Lol.

The squeal on start is all that mine did till the belt slipped. I think that they slip on start till the rubber heats up then it grabs. Its cheaper to check it then to do a top end or complete overhaul.
