RE: Fresh 420a engine
your engine builder should tell you all you need to know about breaking it in.jus my opinion, but id say get oil changes at 500,1500 miles, from there you are fine. Use a thicker oil at first like 20w-50 so everything seals properly. at 1000 miles you should take it back and re-torque the head/have everything reinspected to make sure nothing came loose.
as for breaking in the motor, there are 2 ways and most people only believe one or the other. Some say to baby it, ex 1st 500 miles stay under 3k rpms etc. I believe that will lead to a weak motor. Most perforamnce enthusiasts understand that motors need to be driven a little more rough, especially during the first 100 miles so the valvetrain seats properly. I dont mean drive off and start drag racing, but try to vary the rpms a lot. In other words, stay off of freeways where the rpms are just going to stay at the same speed the who drive. stick to stop and go traffic, hills, curves, and shift frequently.

i think you guys are talking about two different processes. i think get435 is saying to use regular oil for the first 1500 miles, whether you change the oil or not. most of us know, on a new engine build, you should change the oil about every 500 miles. i think get435 is saying that when you do change the oil, continue to use regular oil for the first 1500 miles. i DO NOT think hes saying to not change the oil for 1500 miles

Thats his opnion, talk to any other mechanic and they will tell you differently.

Never listen to satan(dealer), I they never have anything good to say. Its always bring the car in, we know what we are doing. I went there for a stock rebuild and the guy behind the counter tryed to tell me just to put a 4g63 block in the car and call it a day. He said that the trannys were the same, along with the heads, ecu, and such. He didnt like it when I told him that he was stupid.

On my new car (Granted it wasn't a fresh rebuild it was brand new off the lot) I drove it like i do now From dead starts I run it up to redline before dropping into 2nd then doing the same there then I usually skip to 4th (Cuz I'm gonna be cruising at a steady spead LOL) when I get to 5th I really don't push it too hard I usually stay around 3500 RPM. I did that till I hit around 3K miles and did the first oil change. After that I've been beatin the car at times mercilessly (Let's see 120 MPH down I-95 for about an hor in pouring rain....) LOL. And she runs like a champ!
