FWD or AWD?
to propperly launch an awd car... you don't just bounce the rpms' off the rev limiter... you find you critical launching point and set a 2 stage up to it. or just keep ur foot on the accelerator at that RPM until you launch. there is no need to dump the clutch (release ur foot IMMEDIATLY) other than to show off and be stupid, eventually you will either burn up your clutch or snap an axel. i've seen cars go as quickly as 20k miles and last as long as 160k miles but if you do it at every stop light it's bouned to happend some time. which is why they build aftermarket, stronger parts.
Ok im comming in to save the day a bit. RCJ did a good job of answering it. But heres a bit more.
Your friend with the evo broke his t-case for 2 reasons. The first is that the evo t-cases are known to be weak. Alot of people have had those go. Bu the second reason is because he doesnt know how to drive his car. Because mike (emonz57) on here has over 40k and still on stock clutch and hasnt had any problems with the t-case. What he probably did is what RCJ was talking about, is just dumping the clutch at high rpms to launch it. That puts alot of extra stress on your t-case and will eventually break it.
Now the 2g AWD dont have as bad a problem with the t-case but they still can break if not driven correctly. To launch and AWD you want to be around 5500-6000 and then you have to do a small feathering motion. Basically you ease off the clutch while slowly stepping on the gas. Because if you simply dump the clutch you will bog the car. You WILL NOT spin tire. Unless you have alot of power.
So launching it the correct way and you shouldnt have any problems with the t-case or the drivetrain. In launching however you do have to burn up the clutch a bit, so if its on a stock clutch, its not gonna last very long doing alot of launching.
