Is it good or bad???

i am planning on going to a junk yard this weekend that is a you pull it and i need to know how to tell if an engine is good or not?(spinning a rod,etc) i also need to know how to find out if a transmission is good or not? the cars dont have anything written on them telling weather or not it is good. and everything is sold as is. I also dont have the money right now to buy anything that is remanifactured so i have to get it from a u pull it

ya.. Anytime its not running its hard to tell.. Like sebba said, check the oil pan for metal shavings.. You could also take a 1/2" ratchet and extension and turn the motor over.. Other than that your taking your chances.
- And check for blown head gasket.

check to see if there is alot of oil leaking from the valve cover gasket.. this is one sign that in its running days it mighta been abused.. will they let you start the car before you make a move?? or maybe take it fora test drive at best
it would have been a smart comment except that if its a junk yard car it hasnt been running for some time and there is always gonna be crap on it from other people taking parts, ect. So thats really not gonna help you. Plus abuse isnt the problem. Its just whether or not it will run.
Your right, it will just tell you if it has had the ***** reved off it.
Combined with checking the crank for heat marks, and looking at the oil,you can establish if it is a good motor or not.
