Ok I need some help, I'm looking at Eclipses 95's to 98's and I was wondering what modles there were and what was there engine power-train setup. Also if you could be so kind as to maybee list the models for the Spyder to please. I'm 15 and am looking to buy my first car and want something fun. Thanks for any help.

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I have a 98 eclipse spyder GS which is a 2.4 liter. You can get the GST which is 2.0 turbo engine and is much faster. I'm not sure what the horsepower is on both, but the GST would blow my GS away at stock. Just to let you know that if you do get a GS in a Spyder, you will not be able to find as many aftermarket parts for your car. It seems that most of the aftermarket parts are made for the turbo only or the GS hardtop which is a 2.0 nonturbo. It's confusing, but it really is a nice car. By the way, Mitsubishi didn't start making Spyders until 96, so I guess you should be lookin' for a 96-99.
Hope that helps.

Oh and one more thing for specs, the 2.4 GS is a SOHC, while the 2.0 turbo and nonturbo are DOHC.

If you get a turbo insurance will be outrageous, and repairs will also, so I recommend you getting a gs or something.

also, repairs a'rent bad...they're the same as a normal eclipse...timing belt, water pump, sensors,...theyll go on any mitsubishi...if uve got a turbo...let it cool or like 45 sec. unless ur romping on it then let it a little longer...do that, and youll be pushing 13 l.b's in 5th gear...

NOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I always have to throw my opinion in whenever someone mentions the 2g spyders! Get the Spyder GS(i'm a fan, can you tell?). They're just as upgradeable as the turbo models and have much more potential for the street. They're also much cheaper in price and in insurance. Basically everything that can fit on the turbo eclipse can fit on the spyder gs, and it's *very* cheap to turbocharge them. I'm doing a write-up on the spyder gs's and how to modify them and turbocharge them, so check back here in a couple of days. But the basic ratings for the cars goes like this:

1995-1999 Eclipse HP , Torque Weight

Eclipse RS/GS ------------ 140hp , 140lbs 2798/2838

Eclipse GST/GSX--------- 210hp , 200lbs 2986/3103

Eclipse Spyder GST ----- 210hp , 200lbs 3023

Eclipse Spyder GS ------- 141hp , 140lbs 2888

The Spyder GS's have very low weight(no heavy OEM turbo equipment or leather seats), and have a wonderful torque band. Also, all Spyders are Built on the GSX chassis, and there are quite a few custom Spyder AWD's running around. But I recommend the Spyder GS for one reason, it's got the better engine. Sure in stock trim it's a little underpowered, but you can turbocharge it for very cheaply and get more power out if it than the 4g63. But hey, you're a kid, start off with a 97 RS and learn some driving skill before you get big power.

yea, spyders are (in my opinion) the best eclipse out there just because they're so much fun, and the insurance on them is about the same as any other eclipse, depending on your age of course, but SpyderGS i really wanna see how to turbo the 4g64 engine when your done with that write up, i figure since winter is commin that would be the best time to do it, cause i got nothin better to do anyway............

I'm still stuck on the head swap issue. I have kind of a back and forth argument as to whether a dohc head swap is a better option for a 4g64 rather than the stock sohc. The reason is that the 4g64 doesn't need to rev as high as the 4g63 to make power, and wouldn't really *need* the dohc head. One of the first pioneers of the turbo 4g64 is still running a SOHC stock head on his spyder and pushing about 370hp to the wheels. The DOHC head gives a little increase in power but is more useful for higher rpm action. Remember, the 4g64 has a 100mm stroke compared to the 4g63's 88mm's. Power comes like way sooner, like a big displacement engine. Plus there are many different 4g63 DOHC heads that are able to swapped in, and they all make power at different levels. The 2g turbo head for example gives a very good low and mid range power band due to it's runner design and smaller intake ports. Now a 1g turbo head gives great top end power, but at the cost of low and mid range power. So if you want a somewhat balanced engine, you would go for a 4g64/1g head. If you want an even meaner torque curve but less high rpm action, you'd use a 2g head. Then there are the hyundai heads....now we get into compression....

You see there's quite a lot of info, and i don't wanna makes this thing like 5 pages long. But i want to be thorough enough so that you guys have options and can build the engine of you're choice.
