Default My new Eclispe

I just got a 98 GS T Spyder. I like it a lot, its a nice car. Ive heard that bad things happen to the transmision after a while, its a 98 with 62K miles, to my knowledge the trans is fine, can someone tell me why Ive heard this though?

Nothing bad ever really happens to tranny, you'll hear a lot of rumors like that since in-experienced drivers tend to beat on their cars daily. They'll upgrade the engine, but leave the transmission stock and not even worry about it. Then when the trans goes out, they're like "that was a pos". The transmissions are pretty strong, the most common problem is that the 1st and 2nd synchros go out. But that's after years of neglect and abuse, and it's not all that frequent. Drive your car like you're paying for it and the transmission will last a long time. On my 96 spyder, the tranny was still doing great at 126k miles and i was only on my second clutch.

Is it an auto, if so...yeah your tranny will start acting up and eventually self-destruct. The reason for this is that Mitsubishi for some reason decided to slap a Chrysler tranny onto their cars. Big Mistake. Chrysler has the worst automatic transimissions out of the big 3. My 92 LeBaron's tranny sticks in 2nd gear as some kind of "safety feature." It has 174,400 miles though, and is still going.

Yeah, way to give him a good out look on his car, mesa

Well, that's partly correct, the transmissions are *made* by Chrysler, but are designed by Mitsu. The tranny on his spyder is either the f5m33(manual) or the f5a33(automatic). These transmissions are hooked up to almost every 2wd 4g63 in the world, but the non-US spec 4g63's have Japanese made transmissions. Plus they're close to identical to the AWD w5m33/w5a33 trannys found in the eclipse GSX and infamous Lancer Evolutions! Now the part about them being made by Chrylser.....well yeah....that is their downfall. Only the 95+ Eclipses have a Chrysler made Tranny, And well....despite their good design, you can't slack off and use sub-par components. It's like making a house out of cardboard, sure it'll work for a short while, but it'll eventually fall apart....

Sorry about that...haven't had my caffeine yet and I was going through one of my fits.
I guess not all Chrysler trannys are crap, but mine sure is.[:'(]

Hey, thanks alot on all of the replys. I was also wondering if anyone knows a good website for Eclipse parts. Im having lots of fun with the car, I might get some mods done but not as of now cuz I am paying it off and I have no money for mods. I just want to see prices and things.
