Ive found that more people have bad 7bolts than bad 6bolts, have you not?

 

i wont disagree that a 6 bolt will take twice the abuse that a 7 bolt will, but i do agree if it runs, run it till it blows, get the most out of it. when the time comes for a new motor, then go 6 bolt.
lets not start the 6 bolt / 7 bolt arguement that seems to happen in ever other thread
we all know a 6 is better, but there nothing wrong with a good running 7.

 

Exactly. Out of the 3 DSM's I've worked on, 2 have spun bearings. My 95 GST, and mybuddies 97 GSX. The other one... well it has over 160k miles on it. 98 Spyder GST. So, run it til it blows. There's now way of knowing if it's a "bad" 7 bolt.

 

Well, from what I've read on this forum, if your motor works leave it unless you plan on boosting the crap out of it. I honestly do not think I will pass 350 hp right now with only about 16 - 20 psi of boost. Does that make sense? From what I was reading that is mild modding for this motor. I dunno.

How much of my motor can I keep if I swap to a 6 bolt? I've read that a nice 6 bolt setup uses a 2g head with 2g manifolds. So wouldn't my clutch remain the same as well as my water pump? What about my pulleys? I know the flywheel would have to change, but my clutch cylinders would remain too, no?

Most of it stays the same. Waterpump would be different though.

 

swapping out a 6 bolt isnt as simple as removing your current 7 bolt and just bolting up the 6 bolt, you will need a few things, i don't have the list infront of me anymore but i think they had a 6bolt swap kit on buscharracing.com (btw, the 6 bolt came in the 89-92.5 dsm's). how many miles are on ur 7 bolt? i would say if you are giong to replace all that you may wanna replace the bearings... that is one of the bigest things other than crankwalk that happense to these cars... spun bearings. but personally....... if it were me, and i was gonna be pulling the motor, i wouldn't wanna do it twice. So i WOULD swap to the 6 bolt. that's just me b/c i have a second car and a bike to drive around while my DSM is out of comission. If you are intesteted TheEngineer has a 6 bolt block for sale fori think 150 bucks.

Well I wasn't worried about doing a 6bolt swap because I heard crankwalk occurs around 70k or 130k. My motor has 157k on it. It doesn't show any signs of crankwalk (left turn clutch stick or oil light flash). I kno what you mean about pulling it once and doing the work now, but a 6bolt swap is over my head and I need to get my ride fixed yesterday. I was just trying to get as much done now since I am going to pull the motor n tranny. I honestly might buy a 6bolt and keep it on the side in case things do get bad, but right now I think replacing/repairing what I can then riding it till it blows up is my best bet. Meanwhile, I will do more research on a 6bolt swap and maybe build it myself on the side.

Where can I get bearings. I checked a few sites and can't seem to find any?
