Too much transmission fluid? What happened?

So, I was working on my car today and while I was in there, decided to check everything out. I've had it in the shop a couple times for various reasons at a couple different places. Anyway, I check the transmission fluid and it looks like it's sky high!! Could this just be an anomaly or is this really screwed up? On the stick, it appears that I have twice as much fluid as I should have and the car hadn't been driven for days! I was in shock. So I took it for a drive and read it again and it's still the same. Pull it out and the fluids dripping off it like crazy. It read on the stick a few inches past the hot mark.
I'm afraid that it could have been like this for a long time. The last time I had the tranny flushed was a few years ago. They could have left too much in. Or, a shop I went to could have added more when I didn't need it. I've never added any tranny fluid to it. I did the last oil change myself but the one before I had it done. I'm very concerned about this now. What do you do if you have too much tranny fluid in there?
Wish I would have checked this a long time ago.

It will cuz its not flowing through the converter & valve body. half of the Tq converter drains out into the pan.
Check it running, hot, in park / neutral. Drive for for about 5-10 minutes then check it and see what u get.
Cold it will read a little low usually
