Default Tranny prob?

I got my 98 GST Spyder about 5 months ago... I ended up putting a new motor in it because a piston ended up hitting a spark plug.. (Dunno how that happened...) But anyways.. Before that happened the check engine light came on and was misfiring.. Also Over drive wouldnt come on when i pushed the button (Automatic By the way) The problem was fixed with a new motor.. Just today... The car wouldnt shift into overdrive, and when i take off from a stop it seems like the car is stuck in 4th gear... It doesnt shift at all and I can't turn overdrive off or on with the switch again.. Keep in mind it stays in 4th gear all the time.... Even at hi speeds... I can't take the car much over 60 or it will get into high rpms(Which I think happened last time).
I also put in new gauges on the dash.. Which I don't think would have done anything... But nothing else has been done...

So I'm thinking its either something with the wiring...

or even worse, that the tranny is crap...

Anyone deal with this or hear anything about it? Im still clueless what to try at this point so far...

The only way I could see a piston hitting a spark plug would be for the bolts to come off the conecting rod. Maybe the timming belt went? Any way back to your problem its electrical, or atleast I think it is. Reset the ecu and try it out, if that dosent work bring it to a tranny shop and get them to scan the ecu and see whats going on.

I was thinking it was an electrical problem also... So i reset the ecu and nothing happened.. Still stuck in 4th gear.. Somebody mentioned about checking the tranny fluid... Possibly that?

Maybe? At this point I would go to a transsmission shop, chances are some sensor or something is broken. This is the exact reason why I like 5spd's much easier and stright foward.

hey i hear you on that problem...my 98 GS spyder is doing the same thing....its stuck on a high gear also, the check light can be temporarly off by unplugin the battery...but i took my car to a tranny shop today and they told me their was nothing wrong with the transmission but something electrical. The mechanic told me my ecu is not talking with the tranny's computer. That if i could bring in another 98 eclipse in they could switch the ecu or something i forget and see if the problem of by replacing the ecu. But prolly ill reset the ecu tommorow and see if that helps well good luck and when i get it fixed ill tell you the details......

For some reason the auto tranny eclipse ecu seems to go bad, on 2gnt their is a collective problem solving effort in effect... lol. Most of the time the heat under the hood slowly kills the ecu, its also a major problem with the 95 2gnt's.

Check the vac lines i have seen this happen with other cars because the vac lins were cracked it dose not allow the tranny to kick the gears down or go into OD.

well yah guys i took my car to the dealer and they ran a diagonistic on it...AT first they told me this was serious and they dun know wats really going on. Then they said The problem were fuses out of place that made the car run on safe mode.... so you should double check your fuses make sure their all in place.... The worst part was that now that my car can go past 60 i ****in got a speeding ticket today which really suxed.....
