Default Turbo n00b here - couple questions

Hey I just got a 97 GS-T. Its my first experience with a turbo. Its auto. No flaming please - I don't have the car to bring it to the track or anything and I'm not totally interested in getting the best performance possible.

Anyway, I have a couple questions about it. Sometimes when I'm going slow or not applying gas, the RPMs get really low - like 300-600 - and the transmission seems to go into the wrong gear or something. Its like if you screw up a shift in a manual. The car has a bov and a manual boost controller, and I was wondering if either one of those would account for that.

Speaking of the boost controller, can someone give me a brief primer on that?

Also, should I put the overdrive on or off when I'm driving slower? In the RS I had before, I would just keep it on all the time; but with this car I tend to switch back and forth depending on my speed because of the aforementioned problem.

Do you have an aftermarket or stock bov, and are you ventingor recirculating.

Its an HKS, and I'm not sure what venting or recirculating means, to be honest lol

recirculating is when you have a tube running from the discharge of the bov to your intake pipe. If it is not set up like this it will cause the car to run like crap. Venting means that there is no tube and that it discharges the air to atmosphere, which is bad for our cars. Also just so you know the hks bov does not work well with our cars, i would suggest getting rid of it and buying a greddy type s, or rs bov.

there should be a shorthose going from the BOV to the intake pipe approx. 1" in diameter. But on the rpms thing, how fast are you going when it does this. Its sounds to me like its just dropping into overdrive

It usually happens when I'm going about 15 or lower

^^^^No thats the hose for the vaccum. On the other side of the bov does it look like this, can you see those 3 fins, or is there a tube coming out of there?

then that means u are venting to the atmosphere... you need to get a recirc kit and recirculate it back into the intake.... the reason why this makes ur car run crappy is cause this BOV is after the MAF, so the ecu is reading a certain amount of air that will be going through the motor and compensates with the right amount of fuel. With the BOV venting to the atmosphere, you are shooting a bunch of that same air that the ecu is compensating for into the atmosphere. This will cause ur car to run rich with too much fuel and not enough air, and will make ur car run crappy. But like bestwiseguy suggested, the HKS for whatever reason is notorious for not working well with our DSM"s, so I would suggest selling it and buying a Greddy like he had mentioned... also having OD on all the time is no big deal... It's basically a 5th gear that ur car will switch into on the highway so it'll use less gas = better gas mileage... hope that all helps

you have 2 problems here. your car is using one of the worst BOVs for your car and its venting. you 'should' fix both. or at the very least but a recirc kit so its not vented
