turbo protection
I have a 99 gst w/ 88k miles on it. I want to know how I can make the stock turbo last longer. Like what would I do to keep it in top shape. How long should I let it cool down on avg? what type of oil is the best for it and should I change it sooner than 3000 miles? Also are there any upgrades that I can do to extend the life of the turbo.
Right now I just have an injen intake tsudo 3" catback and Greddy intercooler piping.

What does your Tsudo catback sound like, because thats the one I ordered and its waiting for me back in the states! Im really anxious to hear it! But for your turbo, I dont have a turbo personally, but if you really want to preserve your turbo, the best thing to do would be not to race it! Also you can let your engine sit and run for about 5-10 minutes after you drive it hard, just to let the oils run through it, if you dont do that, your turbo will mess up eventually! Thats about the only info I know about that, I dont know what kind of oils to put in it! Sorry!
You do NOT need a timer. After a hard drive just drive it normally. When slowing down keep it in gear and the the RPMS take you down. Shift to the next and do this til lyou come to a stop.
1. It will force the hot Exhuast gas out faster by putting a load on the engine.
2. The oil is so presurized that it will have flowed enough through the turbo.
3. You don't have to spend over $100 to let your car cool.
Even if you do get a Turbo Timer, 5 min is TOOOOO long. 30sec to a 1min is just fine if need be.

The oly real thing you may be able to do right now to preserve your turbochargers life is regular oil changes. You never know how the previous owner drove the car so you can't relly tell what shape the turbo is in. Being at 88k miles and about 6 years old, my suggestions are start saving soon for a replacement turbo. The stock T25 turbo is fairly cheap now-a-days, so you don't have to worry about too much costly repairs when the turbo starts to die.
A little info on the T25, It's Garrett OEM-production turbo that was used on many Japanese cars, mostly Nissan Turbocharged engines. The next step up would be the T28 series turbo. There are a few variations, such as th GT28 and so forth, but they all stay with-in the T-2 family. Many Japanese export companies will sell a T28 for a good price since the maket has been flooded with them for a while now overseas. Finding a t28 turbo from a rb25 or possibly sr20, would be a perfect replacement turbo, and would give you a good bump in power with OEM reliability. It's just something to think about....
