what does the code mean?

Yes I am new here.
I read many posts these days but I have a newbie question:
What does the engine code mean? Like some engines are 420A, some are 4g63.....
I know they are different types of engines. But what excactly are they?
My car is a 99 Eclipse RS I4 2.0L. Is it a 420A or A588?

engine code do you mean what codes the engine may be giving you i might not understand what you are saying but what i think you are refering to is what codes the motor is giving to a obdII reader. I beleve your car has a 420a.
