Default Wheel Spacers

I was talking to my friend yesterday about suspension's and handling, and he mentioned that he plans on putting wheel spacers on his car. I told him I heard that they are dangerous to use because they put too much stress on other parts. Are they safe or not?

Wheel spacers are more for off-road vehicles to give them a wider stance, but I have also heard that they can put added stress to your sespension and mess up your camber angle and what not. Plus I would asume that since the weight is falling not directly over the tire its going to cause the tire to wear down unevenly.
