Default Wrist Pin or Balance Shaft

Hey Everyone. Just looking for a little info. I just purchased my wife a 96 Eclipse Spyder 2.4 SOHC. I bought it with a knock in the engine with the intent of just buying another engine. I pulled the oil pan and the rod and main bearings looked normal. The balance shaft closest to the firewall seemed a little loose, but the bearings were still in place on both shafts.
The person told me that they timing belt had not been broke or replaced. The engine would knock when cranked but then would subside somewhat but would start again when revved. It seemed like it was coming more from the top end that is why I thought it might be a bent valve or something. Compression was great on all cylinders when checked. I am going to put in a BSE kit, but I'm wondering if it could be a possible wrist pin. I have never encountered a bad wrist pin and didn't know if it was something that was normal in these engines. I have worked on the 2.6 and the 3.0 from the monteros. Broke a timing belt in a 95 galant one time and fixed it. I know the BS's can be an issue and I'm hoping that is it. There was no metal in the oil pan either. Thanks
