01 Spyder GS 2nd Gear grinds
Hi All
First post, so please let me introduce myself. Wife and I are having a mid-forties life crisis, so went out today and bought an 01 Spyder GS 5 speed.
Body is in remarkable shape for the year, cloth interior pretty good, soft top good (one small scuff mark). 175,000 miles. Motor runs great, clutch was changed about 10,000 miles ago.
Anyway, the only issue I could find with the car that has me slightly worried is that the upshift into second was a little tricky, had to go easy to avoid a grind, but after a few shifts, got the feel for it. Downshifting from 3d to 2nd though, I absolutely could not manage without either jamming it in with a grind, or come almost to a stop before it would slip in. All other shifts are fine, stays in reverse, etc.
Current owner says it's been that way since they bought the car at 110,000 miles and they just avoid downshifting past third.
I loved the look of the car, the price was right, so I went ahead an bought it regardless of my concern with the tranny.
So....any thoughts? Linkage out of adjustment? (I didn't think so, because all other shifts are good).
2nd gear synchro shot? (What I'm thinking is most likely)
Might this be an easy (and hopefully not too expensive) repair for a competent tranny shop? Or should I just learn to live with it? Any danger of the whole tranny grenading on the highway?
Thanks for any and all replies. Can't wait until I get it licensed and on the road in another day or so.

Well, picked up the car yesterday. After a few hours, was able to get the upshift OK just about all the time. Downshift was a little better, but still have to be practically stopped to slip it in. Not a real problem, the only time it was a hassle was coming around a corner into an uphill, I'd be lugging it in third, so a little slow up the hill until revs built again. I'll likely change the gearbox oil and see it that helps any. I have read that this is a bit of an issue with a lot of the cars, but would still appreciate any other input...
