Default Convertible Top Boot - Help!

Bought a NOS top boot with instructions on the 'Net for my 01 Spyder as it was missing when I bought the car a few weeks ago.
The instructions are horrible. It looks like they are saying that only the rear plastic retainer and two front retainers clip in, and the rest of the boot just sits on top of the trimline? If that's the case, no wonder so many of them get lost. To my eyes, it looks like the entire perimeter of the boot should be stuffed under the back belt moulding and all the way around the fenders and behind the seat, but when I try to do this, it seems there's no way it's gonna fit. If the top would come down another inch it might.....
Am I gonna break anything if I (gently) push down on the folded top a bit before trying to install the boot?
How does this thing go on?
Help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

They pretty much only just sit over the top. I had one with my o2 spyder it was the factory one and I had my car for about 15k miles before I sold it. Never had it come close to falling off or anything.
