Default mechanical question

so my 2000 GT has this problem and it consists of the heat gauge rises almost to red line and then falls back to normal, as far as i can tell its random, i wonder if the heat gauge is failing. but like a couple minutes after i start the car and it heats up it will almost reach the red line and the fall back down quicker than it rose, i checked all the liquids in the car and there at good levels. what do you guys think?

Definately. It's on the way out and njot much longer before it won't open at all. Then you'll overheat and blow the head gasket BAD times!!

Anyone havea link to how i can replace the thermostat in a 1999 eclipse? I've never done a thermostat install before.I saw a few posts that there were 2 types, one that opens at 180 and at 192, any suggestions as to which is right?I just bought the car and it isn't blowing hot air even though the temp gauge is at the halfway point. Before I move to troubleshooting the heater core I'd like to try the cheap fix first. Thanks for the help!
