1997 montero ls auto Trans grinds while in neutral. Any thoughts on why or how I can fix this?

Do you have any check lights on the dash on? You need to get a scan tool hooked up to see what the computer has detected wrong. With this issue, you have sometimes its a transmission control module. If you have a scan tool, then you need to plug it into the connector which is located front seating area, driver side, under dash, mounted driver side of steering column, then it will give you codes which you can look up further. It is definitely an issue with the transmission. If you don't get any codes than its going to be an internal transmission damage. I hope this exact issue a few times being a transmission control module but also have seen it being a broken part internally. Hope this helps.
