Default Alternator question

I just have a quck question about the alternator on a 97 Eclipse. I went to get an oli change, cuz i haven't gotten ramps that fit my car yet, but when they were done, they said that I had an alternator cable unplugged...Now when I was there, I forgot to ask what the cable did, but I know its a grey, three pronged cable that goes into the side of the alternator, I was just wondering what that cable did, because when it was unplugged, the car still ran/started fine...Just wondering what it does since it didn't make a difference when it was unplugged...
