Default Blue/white smoke

Hello again,I was just wondering if any one knows why when i start my car i get a ploom of blue-ish white smoke, when it sits on a slight hill for about ahour when i go to start it i get the same blue-ish white smoke. Allso i get this smoke when i go in reverse,doe's any one know how to fix this?


It's a 1990 eclipse 5 speed 1.8L non turbo

I would say you have a piston ring that is worn out that is allowing oil to coat the cylinder wall. When you start the car the smoke is the oil that is being burned. Check you oil level as well to much oil is just as bad as not enough. If you have access to a Compression tester test the compression to see if the rings are worn.

or your valve seals are bad. could let some oil past them and have that problwm, i had a 90gs with bad seals and it was bluish white smoke.

i would agree and say the piston rings are bad, by the way i have a 91' eclipse rock on 1G

allso i get this smoke if my car idles for say about 2 mins...It will idle just fine and then i take off and the smoke come's out....Otherwise it only smokes at first take off and in reverse [:@]

It is definatly a seal. I would say head gasket or piston rings. get a leak down test and a compression test. If you get a haynes manual it tells you what the pressure should be for each cylinder.

Okay.So it is my rings and im told it will be close to a $1000 job,But what im thinking is it worth it? Or should i just turn this eclipse into a work-on car this summer buy a new car and just rebuild the engine of the eclispe over the summer?Or should i just sell it?

i got myself into the same situation. buy a different car and sell the one you have while it still runs. once you get into rebuilding the motor up you can be up to a couple grand if you have all the work done right. to do all the engine work yourself your looking at $1,000 and thats if you put the cheap parts in it. but its up to you. good luck with your decision.

Damn that sucks.....I was just thinking of putting a 2.2 in it for around $1000.I still got alot to research and stuff but i want to keep this car (its my first) Im told i can buy a 2.2 and have a swap done for alittle over a grand so im working on that right now....if all goe's well ill let you know lol
