Default Engine Temp idicator

I have recently observed an odd behavior in my '01 Montero (120+k). Sometimes, at the beginning of the trip (warm engine) the temperature gauge goes all the way to "H" (hot). If I continue to drive, within less then a mile the indicator goes back to normal mid-range. This does not happen on every trip, so far I have observed it only couple times. I have checked coolant level and all is fine. When the gauge shows hot, there is no overflow of the coolant and the engine itself feels pretty normal temp (under the hood). So, here is the question for all mechanics out there - what could be causing this behavior? Is it a faulty thermostat? Gauge or connector? or do I have some obstruction in the radiator? Had anyone seen this in their Montero/Pajero?
