Angry Mitsubishi physical key does not operate the car if FOB is out of battery

Hello

I have a 2012 Outlander XLS with the wireless fob and the turn key for ignition. There is a plastic cover that covers the keyhole and that can be removed to insert the key in case the FOB is not working for any reason, or so I thought!

Last week I was in rush to go out and after unlocking the car the vehicle complained that FOB was not in range. It was not difficult to try to press some keys on the FOB to figure out it was out of battery (no LED). I ran inside to grab the second FOB, and that was also out of battery (geez, they really know exactly what the life span of those batteries are I guess). I pulled the key out to try to start the vehicle with the physical key inside the FOB, but the anti-theft was activated. It keeps prompting to remove the key and will not allow the car to start. I attempted to lock the car and use the key to unlock the doors from outside (which worked), and when I inserted the key into the ignition all alarms went off on the car.

Well... I had to disconnect the car battery, because there was no way to disable the alarm without the FOB. I had to walk to the store, buy damn battery, put in the fobs and by then missed my appointment and was really annoyed.

Now... WTF do they even include a key if it does not work? what is this key is for?
