Default on my 4th alternator and waterpump belt

i dont know what is going on. i have replaced this damn belt so many times its starting to **** me off. after the second belt i noticed that the waterpump pulley had a ding in it bt i straitened it with a screwdriver and a hammer. now nothing is bent or out of wack. but i keep blowing and ruining these belts. i tighten them just right so they dont squeel but not too loose like the book says. any ideas of what i can do to save my newest belt?

Had the same problem with my '89 Galant. After the 3rd belt did some investigating and found the rear bearing on the alternator to be bad. The alternator felt nice and tight when I would check for looseness at the pully. The front bearing is rather large and takes up the slop of the rear bearing. When disassembled, I found the rear bearing to be worn out. When the alternator warmed up, it would lock up and burn the belt. Once the engine was turned off, it would spin easily again. The big clue should have been all the black dust on the alternator. Put a rebuilt alternator on and no more problem. Hope this helps.
