Odometer needle fell off

Odometer needle fell off
Hello, I need help please. I have a mistsubishi eclipse 94 stick shift. The odometer needle fell off so I do not know at what speed I'm riding. But the counter of the miles is working properly. My mechanic recomended that I get an odometer at a junker and he will replace it.
If I do that, and this new odometer has more miles than my car currently has, can I change them? also do you know if I will be better off fixing the one I have?
Please any help or suggestions will be appreciated.
thanks,

RE: Odometer needle fell off
I think you mean to say your speedometer needle fell off. Have you been speeding and getting the needle to hit the stop pin, if it has one? I'm not sure how the needle is attached to the linkage in the speedo? If its just a press fit and you can get inside the bezel you may be able to just press it back on. I would phone you're State DOT and see what the law says about putting on a junked speedo with a different odometer reading. There may be some penalties if the State is strict on this. If you do not report your odometer reading on a regular basis, like a yearly safety check, then there's probably going to be no problem. The junk speedo is probably your best solution, I've done it.
