Default Setting engine timing for Eclipse

This is a rebuild question, I hope I am in the right place on this site. If not, someone point me to the right place, please.
My son and I are rebuilding a '95 Mitsu Eclipse GS DOHC 420A. I have the head on and want to put the cams in, but the crappy manual I have says to just throw them in. By doing so am I not potentially pushing valves into pistons? I have rebuilt many a motorcycle 4 cyl and they have always said where to set the crank/pistons (usually TDC on #1) before bolting in the cams.
Any help would be appreciated.
