Default slack in drive shaft when I hit the gas?

Does anyone know if this sounds like a transmission issue with the input/drive shaft bearings going bad? I think?

When I accelerate from a stop slow or hard starts I feel a little bump which can be felt all the way through the steering column. Also, if I abruptly let off the gas I can again feel a bump resonating through the steering column.

I can also recreate this from a stop...If I hold my foot on the break and then give it gas I can feel the bump...then if I let off the gas (still holding the break) and put it into reverse, I can sometimes feel the bump again as soon as I hear/feel the trans engage into reverse, but if not, all I have to do is hit the gas and then I feel the bump again.

This feels to me like some sort slack has developed in the drive shaft/trans, do you agree? If so, what exactly do you think it is and how expensive is it to fix? Or, is this simple wear and tear and and can be left alone until it gets really bad?

By the way I have a 2002 Galant 4cyl that I have owned since new with 140,000 very well cared for miles with all maintenance done at 1/2 the normal intervals. I'm hoping to keep this car for at least 200,000 miles.

Any input is appreciated!

Kinda sounds like a bad trans or eng mount to me.

i would lean more on the trans side, bad engine mount shouldnt vibrate the whole steering colomn.. luckly enough the mounts are easy to check just in case...

Any way to confirm for sure it is the trans? If it is, do you think it is something easily replaceable, or is this major money. I'm thinking of just driving it easy as possible until it gets worse if it is a truly expensive fix.

Get a pry bar and start moving the trans mount, if it moves alot or klunks around then you know its bad.
