Default smokin montero

My son is giving me his 91 montero w/3.0 and auto. He doesn't have the time to fix it. Runs great but most of the time it smokes. It was my brothers before and the only time it smoked was if you let it idle a long time. It now has over 200k mostly highway miles. I was told by a friend who had a 91 also that the 3.0 is famous for bad valve guide/seals. Hence he had one. What are your opinions as to what the problem is, how to fix and estimated cost as I am poorboy2. Thanks in advance to all.

Sound like your right on with the valve stem seals. The job can be done without pulling the head if your darn handy and have the right tools. 90 percent sure the seals would take care of the problem. I've done maybe 100 sets and it fixed them all.

Thanks MitsMaster. What is involved and what tools are needed? Would it be covered in a repair manual? I'm not familiar with this engine (yet). This monti has hardly needed any work done before and has been too good to let go.
