Default RE: Timing Belt

estraw,

I don't know which engine you have, but here are some general tips.

- I'd encourage you to replace the tensioner with the belt; especially if it wasn't replaced when the belt was last replaced.
- As it's a lot of trouble to get to the belt, I always replace the water pump while I'm there.
- After getting to the belt, BEFORE removing it, it would be a good exercise to line up the timing marks on the cam and crank gears with their counterparts on the block and head. If your particular engine has a shaft for the oil pump, it would also be a good idea to note where it lines up before removing the belt.

Good luck, Jeff
