i have an rs and my engine is knocking (not pinging) at the bottom base of the engine. I have not had it professionally diagnosed yet but two mechanic friends of mine who just listened to the sound it made, claims that its probbaly the pistone sleeve pin? or somethign like that...some kind of ring coming loose. i have 97,000 miles and just bought it 3 months ago. slick 50 doesnt help w/the noise either.; is this a common problem with eclipse's??? If it is that problem it is going to be very expensive i believe.

 

My freinds s10 started knocking and turns out it was a conrod! Get it to a mechanic if it sounds really bad and is only getting worse. You'll need to take it to one anyway if it's something in the block, if you bought it from a dealer....take it back and raise h***.

 

i have a 95 mitsu. GS. i had knocking noises about at the same miles as you do. when i got my car to about 3,500 rpm it would start knocking. mine was a rod bearing. it cost me at the dealer $400. they told me to replace the crankshaft because they did not think it would last long. that was 2 yrs ago.<IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0">

 

Um....thats not healthy man. Im going with what Spyder said on this one, go get the problem diagnosed a.s.a.p. the longer you wait-the more money its going to take to fix it.

 

whenever its internal its pretty tuff to make out exactly what it is (although some sounds are obvious) the only trick i know of to locate a sound (w/out looking around internally) is to use a long screwdriver. put it on the block itself where the noise seems to come from. place and replace the screwdriver around the area, each time put your ear right up to the end of the screwdriver. listen for the point that is the loudest through the screwdriver. at the same time, feel on your ear for the most movement/vibration through the screwdriver.

 

you probably have a bad bearing and hell no slick 50 is not going to help it. does the noise increase with engine speed if it does you probably have a bent or broken rod.

I have just gained entry to the engine Knock club. With no warning except that my engine refused to start because of a low battery, and about 20 miles of loss of power at upper RPM range, Whne I replaced the battery I got an engine knock sound. I had just driven 20 miles with the top down and heard nothing. After the car sat over the wekend, going only 1/8 of a mile since the sound started, towed to a mechanic, he said that the knock was loud until the oil prssure built up, indicating most probably Rod Bearings. He suggested since the problem only just happened, replacing the shells might at least get the car back running so I can trade it in. Does anyone know the cost of doing Rod Bearing shell replacement? Is it possible for a backyard mechanic to do the job? What is the likelyhood of success?

I had the timing belt and tensioner replaced at 70,000, now has 112,000, have had oil changed regularly, about every 5,000 ( even had it done with the new battery yesterday, before the battery chnange, but immediately after the knock began ( 1/8 mile, 2 blocks). </P>
