Default 1998 Montero Sport - engine light code indicates transmission issue

Hello - my engine light came on a few days ago, in my 1998 Mitsubishi Montero Sport. Took her in and the mechanic refers me out to a transmission specialist. I asked which one, and he says he doesn't know of any in San Francisco. I tried calling one, but they are short handed and couldn't service my car as a result.
The car seems to be running fine, but I'd like to know what's going on and if a fix is in order. I can travel a bit outside of San Francisco. Any advice on what I can and should do would be most appreciated. I don't have any information on the code number. All I know is it is internal to the transmission.
One last note: this engine light has come on several times before in the last three years. I normally just get it reset and each time the mechanic tells me it's something in the transmission. A couple of times he told me it had something to do with the overdrive.
If this sort of question has been posed before, please accept my apologies. I looked through the forums and didn't see a similar question. Thanks.
Jim
