Default Water temperature gauge

Hey everyone. New member, new Mitsubishi 2004 Eclipse GS owner. I recently bought this car for my 16 year old daughter. It has 146000 miles and is in fair to good condition. First thing I did was put a new cam belt and water pump kit on. Other than that the car runs great and is solid. She was driving the other day and stop the car and called me to say stream was coming out the hood. The radiator had popped at the top seam. I had it replaced along with thermostat and seals. The problem now is that the temperature gauge is stuck on the hottest level. Upon turning the car on the gauge spikes to high and stays there. My mechanic says the sensor is ok and it is an electrical issue. Before I take it to an electrical mechanic I was hoping for some imput here to try and save some $$$. Thanks for any suggestions.
