There are a few things to look for.....

1) Pre 93 It was a 2 bolt bottom end, 91-93 they had a big problem with spun bearings.

2) 94+ 4 bolt bottom end....much better

3) 95 the 6 speed was introduced

4) 94+ Bigger brakes

Also check for heavy rust in the under carriage, there are A LOT of parts on these car, which means a lot to break. Make sure the AWS lines are in good shape. If you are interested PM me I have a 92 Dodge stealth TT with a 95 motor swap w/6 speed conversion. There might be a few other things to check, just basic checks when you are dealing with a turbo car.......If I have missed something I'm sure someone will fill in. Also this has been talked about before I think, so just do a search.

BUY A 3000GT WITH A DOHC ENGINE!!!! I cannot stress this enough. The SOHC motors are a waste of time. Take this from my experiences. I have a '99... the most beautiful 3000gt out there... but it has the SOHC motor. It has really let me down due to the lack of performance for this car.

91-93 - The base model and the SL (basically just meaning an upgraded interior with a premium sound system, to my knowledge) consisted of DOHC engines putting out 220 horsepower. The VR-4 (twin-turboed AWD, AWS version) put out 300 HP.

94-98 - The base model and the SL (same as above) put out 222 horsepower. The VR-4 was then putting out 320 HP.

99 - The most beautiful year of the 300GT. But very different than previous years. The biggest one being there were different engine setups for all the trims. The base model used an SOHC (as noted by m3kgt_99) and put out a measely 161 HP, as they tried to make it more affordable (selling out, in my opinion). The SL version also dropped, though only slightly, to 218 HP. And the 99 VR-4, perhaps one of the most beautiful cars ever made, continued the dream of 320 HP with a twin-turbo engine.

Hope that helps.
