So, if my suspension is squeeking like crazing, even on relatively flat pavement, ****'s ****ed up I should just assume?

your shocks are going bad. Not the end of the world. Not springs, shocks. No biggie deal with the squeeking if you are broke.

actually, squeaking could be from any of the movable componants.
ball joints, inner or outer tie rods, sway bar links or bushings, etc.

Can you localize the squeaking, or at least isolate when it happens?

If it is happening for every little bump, sway or movement of the car, it is most likely going to be your sway bar bushings or your struts. There is a possibility that it is your main bushings too, but the 3S' I have seen that creak there only do it when you are turning for some reason.

Does the creaking sound like a door creak, or does it have a ticking to it? If this is the case, it is probably your wheel bearings. More indication of this is if your steering feels like it's not holding alignment or as if part of it is lose.

If the creaking only happens when you are turning, it most likely is in your steering rack, but it could possibly be in the main bushings or wheel bearing.

A final thing to check would be all of the bolts holding your strut/spring assembly together. A friend had a SL that had just about everything replaced but his squeaking problem kept going away for a little then coming back. We were just messing around in there out of frustration and we found that one of the bolts on one of his struts had come loose (not out, just loose) in the month or so since it had been last worked on. We put some lock-tight on there (just enough to keep it tight, not to seal it) and the creaking stayed away… Not sure why it happened, but best we could figure is that the strut was moving the camber and causing creaking when it moved…

If you do find you have bad struts, I highly recommend you get the KYBs or better – it will cost you less than OEM replacements and they will handle better than OEM.
