Default Looking to buy 92' vr-4

hey guys I found a 1992 300gt vr-4 with 101k on it for about 4 grand... i am seriously considering about buying this car but i am worried about its dependability i am hearing alot of roumers about transmission problems.... what are this cars mechanical weak points? and how expensive are they to fix, i am very mechanicaly inclined and can do almost any repair, other than transmisson rebuilds... so what does it cost for a new transmission if this one does go, and are these cars a pain to work on? or are they fairly easy to work with?

Two things... The '92 VR-4's came with 300HP. You can up that by increasing the boost as they did on the later models. The transmissions may develop a syncro problem. This can be solved by putting the right fluid (modern synthetic) into the tranny. Not the recommended oil!!! The only other problem is the transfer case (viscous coupler). Some models developed leaks which caused the wheels to lock up when the fluid emptied. This should have been fixed by the dealer if it included your car. Run a Carfax to see if there are any open recalls on that vin#. I personally prefer the second generation VR-4 with the extra gear. Transmissions run about $7000, but because of a law suit, the manufacturer of the getrag transmission has to sell replacement parts for the transmissions now. So, you can get transmissions rebuilt or parts replaced now at a much lower cost.
