Default MPI/MFI RELAY question

Sometimes after the car is warmed up , i cannot get it to start again, until i pull on the throttle cable. After a couple tugs on that, the car starts without sounding like its being choked out and the fuel pump engages well and I'm back in business. Ive been told its the MFI. aka MPI relay and NOT the ECU , because the ECU is responsible for taking over after the car is started. Can anyone confirm ? Thanks ..
