Are you sure the SL came with the Electronically Controlled Suspension ? I always thought that was only available only on the VR4?

Yes the SL came with ECS. Mine has it. As far as replacement I am not sure I was wondering myself.

Yes you can switch to aftermarket shocks if you chose. I suppose the only main issue will be loosing the ability to adjust between tour (softer compliant ride) and sport (well damped and stiff) when switching to aftermarket. If you're considering replacing the factory ECS shocks because the sport/tour mode is indicating a failure in the system, try removing the strut caps on top of the front strut towers and inspecing the wiring from the outside strut cap connector to where it plugs into the shock. I have seen several instances where one of the wire breaks causing the ESC to shut down. If this is the case, you only need to replace the strut caps.
On another note, if you're considering replacing the factory ECS struts because of a random clunk noise while driving over rough roads, there a chance the the upper strut pivot bearing is worn down. This can be purchased seperately NOT requiring the purchase of the entire $trut assembly. Good Luck!
