Default vr4 mechanical evolution info neeeded

I have been considering buying a earlier year VR4 ... I keep finding conflicting info on mechanical issues and hope some of you can clear them up for me.
Here are my questions:

1. --- Am I correct that the 1992 does NOT have the 25 spline output shaft?
2. ---- Does the 1993 have the 25 spline output shaft ?
3. ---- Somewhere I read that the VR4 only came with the 5 speed trans...
but after reading posts here I now think it had the 6 speed after 1994 ?
is this true ?
4. --- I like the look of the hidden headlights and am thinking about a 1993.
Any reason that I should NOT go with that year ?
All opinions are welcome.
Thanks in advance for your time and input !!

Not to steer you out of this forum but if you check out 3si.org you will find alot more responses although this forum is nice too. lol.

im not sure about the transmission types on the different years but i definately know that the 91 to 93 vr-4's came with a 5-speed. after that they were a 6-speed for the vr-4 only.

1. Some did, some did not. It depends upon the build date. My 92 was built in June and it has the 25 spline shaft.
2. Yes
3. 94 to 99 have 6 speeds.
4. Other than the fact it is a 15 y/o sports car, the only real common issue is the capacitors on the ECU will likely need replaced.

...and while 3si is an excellent resource, check out Stealth316.com for loads and loads of information.

mid 92 models and up had the 25spline output shaft. There is no definite way to tell by looking at it from the outside, you have to take it apart. For a daily driven car, it makes no difference as to reliability, it really comes into play when you're starting to modify and race/launch the car repeatedly
2. ---- Does the 1993 have the 25 spline output shaft ?

Yes.
3. ---- Somewhere I read that the VR4 only came with the 5 speed trans...
91-93 were ALL 5spd.
but after reading posts here I now think it had the 6 speed after 1994 ?

94-99 were all 6speed. They were not available in automatic from the factory. I have an automaticVR-4 for sale(custom conversion) if you want automatic

93 is a great year. They are cheaper than the 94+ models, considerably. They have a shorter shifter than the 91-92 models (height and throw is shorter), they have a forged crank shaft and 4bolt main girdle (the 91-92 models had a 2 bolt main girdle, and a cast crank shaft, which is not as forgiving as the 93+ engines). The 5spd is a great transmission, some people prefer the 6spd, but the 6spd is MUCH more expensive to replace, and nearly impossible to find parts to fix it.

the 93 has all of the mechanical benefits of the 94+ VR4's, yet has the lower price of the "first generation" models (aka 91-93 pop-up headlights).

All opinions are welcome.
Thanks in advance for your time and input !!
