Default 2000 Diamonte shudder at take off and braking

I have a 2000 Diamonte. I took it into dealership regarding a shudder/vibration I was getting at take off and when braking. I had the rotors cut, allignment done, front end checked still same result. They told me it was a bad tire. I went out and put all new tires on the car only to pull away and I still have the same problem. I took the car to another mechanic and they think its the tork converter. Thus they suggested that I have the transmission re-built. Most recently I am experiencing an occasional slip at about 2 rpm's. I am getting more and more concerned and don't think I can get away with not having something done much longer as the vibration is getting worse.
I am the original owner and have 91K on the car. I need some advice before I go and spend $1,800 on a transmission. Any thoughts guys? I am a female don't know too much about cars and don't want to get ripped off. Am I better off taking it to the dealer for the repair or just a good tranny shop? I am not too pleased with the dealer right now since I spent $500 on tires that I didn't need! Please help. Thank you.
