Transmission Fluid for the F4A51
Transmission Fluid for the F4A51
In order to flush this tranny, We need to special order the Mitsubishi Diamond SP-Ill fluid from the dealership, correct? Well not to get personal but, i just got laid off due to the economy and dont have a fortune to spend on this fluid from the STEALERship. Is there any alternative fluid I can use that is cheaper in price? How many quarts do I need in order to perform a complete flush?
-Thanks in advance

From what research I did on flushing the trans, Ive come to the process of flushing the trans isnt all that bad. But let me go over it and you guys let me know if its good.
-drain the fluid from the pan.
-Take the pan off
-Take hose hose from torque converter and drain the rest of the fluid by -turning on the vehicle.
-shut off the car after no more fluid comes out
-connect hose
-bolt the pan back
-fill the trans through the dipstick using 5 quarts, or until its leveled
(do I turn vehicle on while filling the trans?)
Sounds good?

agree 100% I once had the trans flushed by a shop who used thier fluid with an additive that they said is the equivalent of Mitsubishi OEM; this did not work at all and the trans sloshed through gears. Replaced with OEM fluid a week later and fixed everything.

no.
you have no "pan" on your trans. There is a valve body cover facing the front of it, but DONT take it off.
ALL you need to do on a mitsu trans is drain and fill every 30k.. Thats it. If the trans is long overdue, a true flush IS a good idea, in which case Id recommend going to the dealer and spending the 180-200 bucks to do it. It is far cleaner and easier than doing it yourself.
Not trying to brag or anything, but I am definitely not a stranger for when it comes to going under the hood. Although I do have to admit, I am one when it comes to the transmission, seeing how this is really my first time dealing with it. I really can not afford $200 for the dealership to replace my transmission fluid.
The car has 70k and everything that comes with it. The transmission fluid itself, is not reddish\pinkish. It looks old, brownish color. Doesn't smell like burnt anything and there is no metal flakes residing in the liquid. My transmission is on fail safe mode. Stays in 3rd and nuetral light flashing. I HOPE all I need to do is change the transmission oil. I really can not afford a rebuild on this transmission. but then again, ive also heard of the famous heater core issue with it leaking onto the transmission computer, shortening out. I checked my heater core and did not find a leak. yet.
So can I call up a local Mitsubishi dealership and ask if they have it , then pick it up if they do?

Drianing and refilling the fluid is needed on yours but will not remove the failsafe mode operation. Generally this happens when the control unit gets coolant on it; this is not an inexpensive item to replace so shop around at JY's for a good used one.
I just spent some time taking apart the glove compartment and panels to get a better view of the TCU. I pulled up the carpet and noticed a small puddle of old coolant. I got a better view of the TCU from the drivers side. The TCU is covered with a dual layered plastic sheet, I took pulled up some of this sheet to see if the TCU was soaked with coolent, and so far no coolant got to the TCU..yet. There was some, dried up coolent on the sheet, however. I put some fix a leak in my radiator.
What else could cause my transmission to go into fail safe mode?
also, whats JY? junk yard?
EDIT - When checking for transmission fluid, the car needs to be on, right? because I just did it and noticed there was no transmission fluid on the dipstick.
