Default 2007 Endeavor won't go out of park

Hello,
last Tuesday, August 7th I had no other choice but to drive through water coming off an embankment, when I drove through, I could hear a lot of debris banging underneath my Endeavor. Wednesday afternoon, it started to make noise, my husband pulled sticks and large walnut type things out of the engine. the serpentine belt and another belt were starting to shred. A tow truck came on Thursday afternoon to tow it to a mechanic to put the belts on. It technically started, but won't turn over, he also had a difficult time putting it into neutral. He finally got it on the flatbed, took it to the mechanic and now the mechanic can not get it out of park. Is there a way to release the shifter without taking everything apart? We need to get it on the lift to see what is wrong with it.

Thank you in advance.

Hi. Bummer.
These cars do not use a 'solenoid' interlock.(electric) Henceforth, there is no 'button' to push and override the lock mechanism. They use a cable connected with the brake pedal...
So, when the engine is NOT running, the brake pedal will get 'firm' , not wanting to go down in travel much. This means the cable is not moving enough to release gearshift from park.
You can try to hold/push pedal down until enough movement to place in neutral.
OR: have mech/some one to remove cable from brake pedal. Best.

If you have to remove cable from pedal, it will need to be 'pulled'.
Hopefully it didn't come off/break at gearshifter.
Then, you have to dis-assemble console, etc.
Not hard,just a pain.
Good luck.
