Default Power robbing issue???

Hi, all. I have a 2004 Endeavor with about 180 thousand miles. I'ts truly been a champ overall. I went out of town for two weeks, came back home and wife said endeavor is broken. Makes a strange roaring sound as you get up to two thousand rpm's, does change gear fine, I was able to get it up to 60mph but rpm's get stuck around 2k, and the strange roaring, humming noise I don't have a clue. They describe a strange smell also. I'm wondering if it's a clogged cataylitic converter. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated as I would like to keep it out of the shop if at all possible. Also AC I assume has been leaking onto driver side carpet for a few weeks and I can't seem to figure out from where. Mentioning that incase it could be getting something wet that would cause these problems.
Also let me add that It as I rev the engine while parked it sounds normal. Only makes the sound when Im driving and check engine light has yet to come on. While driving it sounds like it's not changing gear(auto) but you can feel it change and it gets up to 60 mph.
