Prior to this weekend I have had no odd noises from my Endeavor. When I put it in reverse and back up it sounds horrible like something is going to break off. Clearly metal on metal noise. Any help would be great. Definitely passenger rear tire. I know the exhaust is there but it is secure and looks fine.
Another thing that seems weird is when I back out of by garage in the morning there is no noise at all. Only the loud thunk once I have been driving for a while and only when I back up. No issues for 9 years now this is my second in in a month.

The noise is not transmission. Noise only happens when in motion in reverse. If I stop moving and leave it in reverse the noise goes away.

In my head I've been thinking it is a brake thing. Not much breaking on the way to work but a fair bit right near work. Brakes are on when I back up since it is usually just into my parking stall. I will try the backing up without applying the brakes to see if that make a difference. Will pull the tire off when i get home to see if I can notice anything obvious.

 

Removed tire and found nothing out of place. Did find that one of my exhaust hangers is broken. I will replace it today and hope that solves the problem. I did find that if i put it in park and rev the engive pretty good I can get a rattling noise, this would definitely the exhaust. Ill report back once the hanger is fixed.

 

Replaced exhaust hanger, all is good. At least for my 10 minute drive to work.

 

SO the noise is back the very next day. Not sure what is rattling. Getting rather frustrated with this. I was convinced it was the exhaust. but when I manually shake it, quite hard I can not get to to rattle against anything. But if its not the exhaust, what else could it be? The noise now happens in forward and reverse but only for short periods. I have noticed that when it starts if I take my foot off the gas it goes away. The noise will happen at all different speeds but always at those speeds. I am at a loss here. Please help!

 

Problem fixed. The issue was the hitch that I installed. The exhaust was hitting it but only once it warmed up and only in certain conditions. Extended my exhaust hangers and I am all good.

 

I'm a little late to this, but when I read it i thought about my issue with a bad Wheel Hub needing to be replaced.

 

Thank you for share this experience. I'm having something similar, but its happen when I stop on a red light or O stop the car. When I shift to neutral or parking, it stops, but sometimes even in parking the sound came up. I just bought the truck, is a 2008 Endeavor with 117000 miles. It has a hitch and I hope it is the same problem and no a differential problem.
