True, keeping up with maintenance does play a significant role in the life span of the T case. Normally when I hear of T cases blowing up it's cause of the gears breaking or simply the shock of a launch, which expands and causes flex in the the case.

How does cooling play a role in breaking the T case? I mean I understand the concept of cooling but when I hear of these things going bad it's normally launching of fluid related issues.

The ACD cases doesn't use spider gears do they? I've understood that the spider gear are made from some sort of weak metal and that's one of the weaknesses found on the early US model Evo's.

should hold up as long as you keep up on it. Doesnt change the fact they require many frequent fluid changes. The T case in the Evo was just poorly designed around cooling and that is part of the problem. The splash guard plays a huge role in routing air to the T case cooling fins

Fluids dont flow very well in them. Its the way the gears catch the oil. the T case in the Evo runs hotter than it should. Which is why fluid changes are nessassary so soon. And that is why people break gears on high RPM launches. Most people crack teeth right off

Say Bye Bye to your EVO if the transfer case is broken.

First thing you should have learn that never bring your car to a Mechanic that usually don't fix TRANNY.

The only place I know that can REALLY DO IT IS "COTTMAN" They only repair transmission for all types of cars. they are very good with it and with warranty

you should have went to "COTTMAN" do not bring it back to that guy a simple fluid mistake is not acceptable for a GOOD MECHANIC.

COTTMAN is a nobody when it comes to Evo drivetrain. If he 'should' have gone to anyone it would be shep.

By the way it is not a say bye bye if the T case breaks. It is as simple as swapping in a RS with LSD in and calling it an upgrade. it just costs like $3k without labor

First of all, I didn't originally go infor any drive train repairs. I simply took the car in the shop to have the clutch replaced. And I might have been wrong to take the car in to the local shop for a job as simple as the clutch but I think an ASC certified mechanic should be able to handle a clutch job.

Right after the 4 wheel lock-up I sent the car right back to the shop that worked on the clutch, but after about a week I took the car to a specialist, Jack of jackstransmissions.com.

I’m not even sure who Cottman is but my first choice was John Sheppard (Shep), only problem he is located in Ohio. Jackstransmissions.com does similar work to John Sheppard and Jack in only 2 hours away from me in Colorado Springs.

My T case survived the tranny lockup. It’s only a matter of upgrading it with bigger case bolts and a few other things. If I was originally responsible for the tranny locking up, and not due to a stupid lubrication issue, I would have taken it straight to a specialist in the first place.

Got a quick question…. how many versions of the LSD/non LSD does the Evo8/9 T-case have? As far as I know 03-04 uses the standard VCU (viscous coupling unit) and the 05+ uses the ACD.

Is there another LSD/non LSD besides the VCU and ACD?

yea all model 03s and all 04 GSRs were open diff VCU and the 04 RS was non ACD with LSD. in 05 all had LSD and ACD and in the IX they stayed the same ACD,LSD.

That is why it is easiest for 03-04 owners to upgrade to a RS tcase because there is no ACD 'BS' so it is just a simple T case with a lsd. they are sopposed to be more sturdy but I never looked into them as I had no need
