Some background, its a 99 galant v6 ES with 192,000 miles. It was given to me a couple days ago. The person that gave it to me said it was running low on coolant and said it was overheating. I put coolant in it and now the temp guage stays right in the middle.

So I tried starting my car this morning and it wouldnt do anything. I jumped it, it drove 75 feet then just shut off. I then jumped it and let it idle for 20 minutes and drove it around the block. As soon as I got back to my drive way it shut off after i slowed down to pull over. I replaced the battery, checked the alternator by taking off the positive off the battery and the alternator still powered the car at that point. It starts fine every time now, but it seems just at slow slow speeds it doesnt like to stay running. I drove it around the block after testing the alternator and then when i got back to my drive way I just took my foot off the gas and let it climb my slightly inclined driveway and the RPM went down to 300ish? and then jumped to 1000 and then back down and then shut off. When I started it back up it stuttered starting a little, then i put it in neutral and let it roll to the bottom of the drive way and started to climb up again. It climbed it fine and then when the driveway got too steep it just sat there at 1000 rpm and stayed running.

you need to check the idling of the galant. this usually occurs when there are idling issues or in some cases even transmission issues.

 

I just cleaned the IAC motor and put everything back together and it works just fine now
