Buying 1999 Mitsubishi Galant? - Questions
Okay...so I am a newbie on this board...but not a newbie to boards in general, so I since I may get flammed on this one with a "Do a search...".
Here is the question(s)
Background (long story short)
I am looking for a nice, dependable "2nd car" that I can drive to work (25 miles each way). I currently have a full size 4x4 pickup and the gas money is killing me, but I have to have the truck to pull my boat.
I found a (appears to be in good condition) 1999 galant (4cylinder, auto) that has had some exterior mods, but nothig too extreme. Lip kits, rims, etc. I am still young at heart so I thought this looked pretty cool. The price seemed right based on the NADA price guide and comparable cars (model, year, mileage on autotrader.com and cars.com). But being the skeptic I am, I had to do my research. Through word of mouth some friends have told me that Mitsubishi, particularly the 4 cylinder models, are notorious for tranny problems. Most of my friends who are "into cars" drive Honda's or BMW's, so this could just be a "my brand is better than that brand" mentality... Or maybe it was just with another model...
Are there any notable tranny issues on this model?
Any particular things I should look for when inspecting this car besides the usual (tires, damage, leaks, etc)?
Thank you for all your help!
Jason

Nothing to notiable when it comes to tranny problems. Only thing is there not the best after you force feed them but nothing a 5 speed swap from a 3G Eclipse can't cure....
Only thing I would check on top of the usualy before buying the car. Brakes....
The 8G is known to have warped rotors but again nothing a little slotted/drilled swap won't fix.

bought a 95 LS w/88k on it. it now has 170k on it. only thing i did to tranny was change filter & flush it. also did timing belt and water pump at about 120k (pump leaked so did other while i had it opened up). this was a great car 'til my son rear ended someone. it could have been fixt but i got a GREAT deal on a '00 Mirage. kept my wife in better spirits . so now i'm gonna try swappin stereo & cd deck from it into the Mirage. keep it serviced and do the timing + water pump @ 100-110k and this car will go over 200k+.
